Below you will find a description of the State Civic Literacy Requirement as well as different options to meet the requirement at Broward College. On the following pages, through the links on the navigation bar at the left, you will also find study materials, library resources, voter education information, and how to contact us for further information.

Civic Literacy Requirement

Rule 6A-10.02413 of the Florida Administrative Code, Civic Literacy Competency states that any first-time-in-college student entering Broward College in the 2018-2019 school year and after must demonstrate competency in civic literacy.


From academic year 2018-2019 through academic year 2020-2021 the civic literacy requirement could be met by one of the following options prior to graduation:

Option 1. Successfully completing and passing one of the following Broward College courses

  • AMH 2020 (History of the United States Since 1877)
  • POS 2041 (National Government)

Option 2. Successfully completing and achieving the standard score of one of the following assessments


From academic year 2021-2022 and after the civic literacy requirement can only be met by taking both:  

Requirement 1. Successfully completing and passing one of the following Broward College courses

  • AMH 2020 (History of the United States Since 1877)
  • POS 2041 (National Government) 

AND

Requirement 2. Successfully completing and achieving the standard score of one of the following assessments
