Once you choose a topic, ask open-ended questions about your chosen topic that begin with Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. These types of questions will help you to narrow your topic. Narrowing your topic helps to focus your research paper. In each library pathfinder a section titled "Narrow Your Topic", lists similar questions on a specific subject.
A better understanding of a subject or issue can help you to narrow a topic. A good place to find background information is an encyclopedia. An encyclopedia is a reference book that provides concise summaries on a variety of subjects or different aspects of a single subject. The library has encyclopedias in print and electronic format.
