Textbook and Course Reserves

BC and FAU faculty may place materials on reserve in their local library for student use. This includes personal or departmental books and articles, library owned materials, and multimedia items.

Place Materials on Reserve

Instructor Owned Materials

  1. Complete the online form and print out a copy.
  2. Drop off the materials and the printout at the reserves location for your campus.
  3. Please allow up to five working days for processing before informing your students.

Library Owned Materials

  1. Check your campus library's catalog to verify material is available.
  2. Complete the online form.
  3. Please allow up to five working days for processing before informing your students.
  4. Reference and Special Collections materials cannot be placed on reserve without prior permission.

The library staff will strive to ensure that personal materials are handled appropriately. However, we cannot be held responsible for the abuse, destruction, loss, and/or theft of personal or department-owned items placed on reserve.

At the end of each term, your reserve items will be returned unless prior arrangements have been made for continued reserve status.

Loan Periods by Campus

Reserve materials are assigned one of the following check-out loan periods set by the department. Instructors may choose from the following: 

  • One (1) hour
  • Three (3) hours
  • Overnight Use
  • Three (3) days
  • Seven (7) days
  • Semester (for Honors Lending Library materials)

Reserve materials are assigned one of the following check-out loan periods set by the department. Instructors may choose from the following: 

  • Textbooks: two (2) hours
  • Student laptops: two (2) hours
  • Headphones: four (4) hours
  • Faculty laptops: seven (7) days
  • Education and some nursing prep materials: seven (7) days
  • Calculators: Semester 

Textbook reserve material can be checked out for two hours, in library use only. A student will need 2 forms of ID to sign out a textbook (Student ID card, Driver's License, library card, etc.).

Copyright Compliance

All materials placed on course reserve must comply with the Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code). In compliance with copyright law, only one copy of photocopied materials may be placed on reserve. Exceptions to this rule are articles authored by the faculty member, solutions to problems of an unpublished nature, and federal or state laws or cases. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept materials for reserve status, if in its judgment fulfillment of the request will be in violation of copyright law.
