In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Broward College Libraries would like to highlight some of library resources and websites celebrating Hispanic Americans.

What is Hispanic Heritage month?

Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week long celebration authorized by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.  

In 1988, it became a month long celebration running from September 15-October 15.  

It is a celebration of the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States tracing their origins from Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.  

September 15 was chosen as it is the anniversary of the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Why does Hispanic Heritage month start in the middle of September?

Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, México, Chile, and Belize all celebrate their independence during the week of September 15. Latinos stay connected and are proud of their countries of origins. As our world village evolves, Latinos are already bicultural and international. They come from 24 countries and can help usher in the global age that is dawning.
