Myths About Online Course Materials

Myths vs. truths

Myth: Library materials are free.

Truth: Tuition, taxes, and other sources of funding are put toward the access of materials through the library. The library provides access to the temporary use of materials in the library whether physical or digital.

See the Library Content menu to get guidance on how to properly incorporate library materials into your course shell.

Myth: I have a PDF of an article which means I own the rights to share the article.

Truth: You only have access to the article as long as the library or you have a subscription with licenses for it. For free articles, it's important to look at the terms of use of the website to ensure you have permission to post the PDF.

For materials with an open Creative Commons license (CC), use this resource to use and attribute these resources correctly in your course shell: https://libguides.broward.edu/OER/OERAttribution.

Myth: I own a copy of the book which means I have the right to share a chapter of the book, so my students don't have to buy it

Truth: The copyright owner still owns the content. To figure whether or not you can share it, use the fair use interactive tool.
