College Read 2020-22: Born a Crime

Guide to support instructors who are incorporating the College Read into their courses.

Across the Curriculum at BC

Born a Crime is a short non-fiction novel that presents Trevor's life in chronological order through short chapters that act as vignettes of his life with some fact/ history entries (usually 1-2 pages in length) between chapters. Although the book works as a whole narrative work it is easily broken into chapter excerpts or read in chunks.

The book is organized in three parts.

  • Part 1 is pages 1-111
  • Part 2 is pages 112-179
  • Part 3 is pages 180-285

Although not necessary, some background information about South Africa and apartheid as it relates to Trevor Noah's childhood can help orient students in their reading.

Below are guides for possible ways to introduce Born a Crime to students that are easily adaptable to content and Pathway.
