When you're writing a paper or have an assignment requiring outside sources, you will incorporate the sources in the following ways:


Quoting

  • Copying the source exactly word for word (verbatim)
  • Use quotation marks
  • Always cite it both in-text and in the References page (APA) or Works Cited page (MLA)

Paraphrasing

  • Putting the information from a source into your own words
  • Is near or longer than the original passage
  • Always cite it both in-text and in the References page (APA) or Works Cited page (MLA)

Summarizing

  • Condensing the main ideas into your own words
  • Is shorter than the original passage
  • Always cite it both in-text and in the References page (APA) or Works Cited page (MLA)
