Facts About Women's History Month

"In 1981, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution establishing National Women’s History Week. The week was chosen to coincide with International Women’s Day, March 8. In 1987, Congress expanded the week to a month. Every year since, Congress has passed a resolution for Women’s History Month, and the U.S. president has issued a proclamation." (US Census, 2009)

Facts From the 2010 US Census

  • There are  155.8 million females in the United States and  151.8 millon males.
  • There are 197.900 females in active military service.
  • 1.7 million of women are veterans.
  • Estimated 82.8 million mothers.
  • Women who worked full time earned $ .77 cents compared to the $ 1 dollar their male counterparts earned.
  • 29.4 million women and 28.4 million men 25 and older had a bachelor's degree or higher. Women had a larger share of high school diplomas, as well as associate, bachelor's and master's degrees. More men than women had a professional or doctoral degree.
  • 55% of college students are women
