Session 1: What is “Research”? An Introduction

Lesson Plan
Students will be introduced to what “research” is, discuss personal information gathering methods, and be shown how to better utilize Google searches to find credible information.

  1. Complete pre-survey in registration form.

  2. Engage in a discussion regarding the nature, importance and effects of conducting good research. (PowerPoint: 10-15 minutes)

  3. Methodology Activity: How do you conduct research? Drawing activity where they map out their research process. (15 minutes)

    1. Which step in the process is the most challenging?

    2. What could make the process easier?

  4. CRAAP Overview (10-15 minutes) 

  5. CRAAP activity (See FYE assignment) (10-15 minutes)

  7. Promote Student Research Appointments, Writing Lab, and Advanced Research Techniques workshop.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, students will,
      1. Better understand “research” - what it means, why it’s important and how to conduct it better.
      2. Better understand personal information gathering methods and identify weaknesses in order to strengthen and improve.
      3. Understand the CRAAP evaluation method and how to apply it to Google searches.
      4. Learn how to schedule Student Research Appointments for further help.
