Argumentative Essay Assignment

Research Essay: Choose from one of the following –

  • Is television a destructive force in society, or is it beneficial?

Some people argue that television has been a destructive force in society. What do you think about the impact of television on people? Write an essay explaining your point of view. Use reasons and examples from television to support your position. Think about why television was invented. What are the three main purposes that television fulfills? You could cite certain shows that help prove or disprove your point.

 

Cite experts’ opinions and statistics to support your point of view. What do those who oppose your point of view say? You must address the opposition (critics) as well. This essay is to be written from the third person point of view (POV) using “he,” “she,” “it,” “they,” “them,” etc. The pronouns “I,” “my,” or “me” should NOT appear in the essay.  Nor should the pronoun “you.”

  • Is a vegetarian diet an advantage or a disadvantage to people’s health?

Some people are in favor of vegetarian diets and others are against it. They prefer a more traditional diet. What do you think? Where do you stand on the issue? Provide evidence to support points. You could discuss health, economics, personal preference, etc.

This essay should include:

  • An engaging hook to capture reader attention, followed by connecting information. The introduction should be suitable to the topic.
  • thesis statement as the last sentence of the introduction. Show connections between your title, thesis, and conclusion
  • Three to five (3 – 5) body paragraphs (There should be adequate and relevant supporting evidence from your research, quotes, and paraphrases to support your thesis. The essay should be 5 or more paragraphs long).
  • A sensible concluding paragraph that reconnects to the thesis. 
  • Include properly cited expert information in the form of quotes and paraphrases
  • Include the opposing viewpoint / counterargument
  • Consider whether you have been effectively persuasive 
  • Follow APA standards. Be mindful of information that goes into the heading, header, cover page, abstract, and Reference page. Be mindful of spacing, etc.

Be sure to write from the third person point of view, and to create an outline which includes a working thesis statement and conclusion, and have it approved by your instructor BEFORE you begin writing the first draft.
