New eResources

HeinOnline - 8/3/2022

We've added three databases from HeinOnline to our A-Z Databases list, please see below:

Civil Rights and Social Justice
Civil Rights and Social Justice, was created to help users understand the roots of the fight for civil rights, how far our nation has come, and how much we have yet to improve.

Hearings and committee prints, legislative histories on landmark legislation, CRS and GAO reports, briefs from major Supreme Court cases, and publications from the Commission on Civil Rights illuminate the storied (and still-unfinished) struggle for equality in the United States. A varied collection of books on related civil rights topics and a list of prominent civil rights organizations supplement these primary source documents and help take the research beyond HeinOnline.

LGBTQ+ Rights
This collection charts the gay rights movement in America, showing the civil rights codified into law in the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as the inequalities that still exist today. All titles in this collection have been assigned one or more title-level subjects relating to their scope, and are further divided into six subcollections, whose areas of focus constitute Marriage and Family, Employment Discrimination, Military Service, AIDS and Health Care, and Public Spaces and Accommodations. A separate subcollection, Historical Attitudes and Analysis, presents books, pamphlets, reports, and more that some researchers may find offensive: viewpoints expressed in these items range from the cause of homosexuality and its alleged cures to the “problems” LGBTQ persons create in society. These items are not presented to endorse their viewpoints. They are included because to understand our present—how far we have come, the obstacles that were overcome, and those that still exist today—one must fully acknowledge the reality of our past, no matter how ugly, dangerous, or offensive it may be.

This collection is rounded out by a curated list of Scholarly Articles selected by Hein editors, as well as a Bibliography of titles to launch your research outside of HeinOnline. Finally, an interactive timeline, incorporating documents from HeinOnline with other media from around the internet, plots out an overview of LGBTQ rights in America from 1950 to the present day, helping to demonstrate the relevancy of the content within the database to the real-world events to which they are connected.

Open Society Justice Initiative
The Open Society Justice Initiative database brings the Justice Initiative’s scholarship to HeinOnline, providing access to works published by the Justice Initiative in HeinOnline’s fully searchable, image-based format. Unique to this collection is the ability to search by Publication Type, a publication identifier assigned by the Justice Initiative to each of its publications, which organizes their works into the following types: Briefing Paper; Publication; and Report.

This database, consisting entirely of never-before available titles to HeinOnline, will be updated yearly as new publications are released by the Justice Initiative.

Alexander Street Press - 9/20/2021

The following collections from Alexander Street Press have been added to our A-Z list:

Black Thought and Culture

Black Thought and Culture is a landmark electronic collection of approximately 100,000 pages of non-fiction writings by major American black leaders—teachers, artists, politicians, religious leaders, athletes, war veterans, entertainers, and other figures—covering 250 years of history. In addition to the most familiar works, Black Thought and Culture presents a great deal of previously inaccessible material, including letters, speeches, prefatory essays, political leaflets, interviews, periodicals, and trial transcripts. The ideas of over 1,000 authors present an evolving and complex view of what it is to be black in America.

American Civil War: Letters and Diaries

The American Civil War: Letters and Diaries collection contains 2,009 authors and approximately 100,000 pages of diaries, letters and memoirs. Particular care has been taken to index this material so it can be searched more thoroughly than ever. Each source has been carefully chosen using leading bibliographies. The product includes 4,000 pages of previously unpublished manuscripts such as the letters of Amos Wood and his wife and the diary of Maryland Planter William Claytor. The collection also includes biographies, an extensive bibliography of the sources in the database, and material licensed from The Civil War Day-by-Day by E.B. Long.

North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries, and Oral Histories

The North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries, and Oral Histories collection includes 2,162 authors and approximately 100,000 pages of information, so providing a unique and personal view of what it meant to immigrate to America and Canada between 1800 and 1950. Composed of contemporaneous letters and diaries, oral histories, interviews, and other personal narratives, the series provides a rich source for scholars in a wide range of disciplines. In selected cases, users will be able to hear the actual audio voices of the immigrants. The collection will be particularly useful to researchers, because much of the original material is difficult to find, poorly indexed, and unpublished; most bibliographies of the immigrant focus on secondary research; and few oral histories have been published.

North American Women's Letters and Diaries

The North American Women's Letters and Diaries collection includes the immediate experiences of 1,325 women and 150,000 pages of diaries and letters. Particular care has been taken to index this material so that it can be searched more thoroughly than ever before.  The materials have been carefully chosen using leading bibliographies, supplemented by customer requests and more than 7,000 pages of previously unpublished material. The collection also includes biographies and an extensive annotated bibliography of the sources in the database.

ccAdvisor - Choice and The Charleston Company (10/15/2018) New!

Choice and The Charleston Company have collaborated to deliver a searchable, authoritative, peer-reviewed guide to academic databases, websites, and tools. This continuously updated, interactive service provides comprehensive, comparative, and authoritative information on a wide range of digital resources. ccAdvisor makes you more effective by helping you select the best and most appropriate resources for your research. Essentially, ccAdvisor is a database comparison tool.

Creating an account (please note - must be on Central Campus to create an account):

IP authentication is the first point of access.  You can search and retrieve full text content without a UN & PW.  If you are within IP authentication (on central campus), you can create a UN & PW, by clicking on Log In at the top tool bar and then click on Create Account. After you have created your UN & PW (on central campus), you can use it remotely.

Using ccAdvisor with an account:

A UN & PW allows you to create a List and then from the List make it a Cardstack. The Cardstack enables you to share titles with your colleagues, and it allows them to vote on each title and add a comment too.  You also have the ability to create a Comparison Table, one of the most powerful tools in the database. When on the new site, you will notice on the left we have many facets you can click on (one at a time) to filter your search results. You can limit by Primary Categories, Secondary Categories, Review Types, and Access Types to name a few. With a UN & PW, you can also Save Searches and set up Alerts.  The alerts can be sent every 30 days or every 7 if you want to see the new titles sooner.
