Circulation / Reserve: Course Reserves

BC and FAU faculty may place materials on reserve in their local library for student use. This includes personal or departmental books and articles, library owned materials, and multimedia items.

Faculty Information

Faculty from BC or FAU may place books and other course-related materials (including personal copies) on reserve. All material placed on course reserve must comply with the Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code). In compliance with copyright law, only one copy of photocopied materials may be placed on reserve. Exceptions to this rule are articles authored by the faculty member, solutions to problems of an unpublished nature, and federal or state laws or cases.

Forms for placing material on reserve are available online on the library webpage, or at the Check Out Desk. A form should be completed and submitted with all reserve material.

Allow five working days for the material to be processed.

At the end of each term, all reserve material will be returned to the faculty member unless prior arrangements have been made for continued reserve status.

Note: FAU Faculty can also put materials on e-reserves through the Boca campus library.

Course Reserves

Students may search the Course Reserves List on the library’s webpage to see if the reserve material is ready for use. Material can be searched by instructor's name, title of the material, or course prefix and number. Materials found on the list can be checked out at the U/C Library Check Out Desk. You need your Student ID and the call number of the item for check out.

Reserve materials may have any of the following check-out loan periods. These loan periods are determined by the instructor.

  • One (1) hour
  • Three (3) hours
  • Overnight Use
  • Three (3) days
  • Seven (7) days
Fines for Overdue Reserves:
  • Hourly Item:               $5.00 per hour
  • Daily Item:                 $5.00 per day

Copyright Restrictions

The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U. S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyright materials under certain conditions specified in the law. Libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of fair use, that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept materials for reserve status, if in its judgment fulfillment of the request would involve violation of copyright law.
